Itinerary of 3 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1Fes - Ifrane - Meddile atlas - Ziz Valley - Merzouga Desert

Your 3-day journey from Fes to Marrakech begins early in the morning as you leave the city and travel through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. The road takes you first to the charming town of Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its clean streets, cedar forests, and European-style architecture. From here, you continue to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where you can observe the wild Barbary macaques that live freely in the trees.

Afterward, the route descends toward the Ziz Valley, a vast stretch of green palm groves framed by dramatic red rock formations. You will stop for panoramic views before continuing to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops. By the afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Here, you will meet your camel guide and ride across the dunes as the sun sets over the golden sands. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay in a luxury or standard desert camp, where you can enjoy traditional music under the starry sky.

Day 2Merzouga Desert - Rissani - Todgha Gorges - Dades Valley

After waking up early to watch the sunrise paint the dunes with warm colors, you return to Merzouga for breakfast and a quick refresh. The journey continues to the town of Rissani, one of the oldest trading centers in Morocco and home to a traditional market when open.

From Rissani, the road leads through a series of Berber villages until you reach Tinghir, where the impressive Todra Gorge rises with steep limestone cliffs on both sides. You will have time to walk inside the gorge, take photos, and enjoy the cool breeze that runs between the canyon walls.

In the afternoon, you continue through the Dades Valley, a region famous for its dramatic rock formations and kasbahs. After exploring the scenic viewpoints, you settle into your hotel or riad for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3Dades Valley - Rose Valley - Ouarzazate - Marrakech

On the final day, the tour follows the famous Road of 1000 Kasbahs, passing old fortresses and traditional villages surrounded by palm groves. The first major stop is Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa” because of its film studios and desert landscapes. Nearby, you visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient ksar that has been featured in many famous films and series.

After exploring its narrow streets and earthen buildings, the journey continues across the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. You will enjoy changing landscapes, from mountain peaks to small Berber villages built on the hillsides. By late afternoon or early evening, you arrive in Marrakech, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, marking the end of your 3-day desert adventure.
