Starting on a memorable 3 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech, crossing the breathtaking Atlas Mountains and discovering the magic of the Moroccan Sahara. This journey combines cultural experiences, beautiful landscapes, camel trekking, and an overnight stay in a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
Your 3-day journey from Fes to Marrakech begins early in the morning as you leave the city and travel through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. The road takes you first to the charming town of Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its clean streets, cedar forests, and European-style architecture. From here, you continue to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where you can observe the wild Barbary macaques that live freely in the trees.
Afterward, the route descends toward the Ziz Valley, a vast stretch of green palm groves framed by dramatic red rock formations. You will stop for panoramic views before continuing to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops. By the afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Here, you will meet your camel guide and ride across the dunes as the sun sets over the golden sands. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay in a luxury or standard desert camp, where you can enjoy traditional music under the starry sky.
After waking up early to watch the sunrise paint the dunes with warm colors, you return to Merzouga for breakfast and a quick refresh. The journey continues to the town of Rissani, one of the oldest trading centers in Morocco and home to a traditional market when open.
From Rissani, the road leads through a series of Berber villages until you reach Tinghir, where the impressive Todra Gorge rises with steep limestone cliffs on both sides. You will have time to walk inside the gorge, take photos, and enjoy the cool breeze that runs between the canyon walls.
In the afternoon, you continue through the Dades Valley, a region famous for its dramatic rock formations and kasbahs. After exploring the scenic viewpoints, you settle into your hotel or riad for dinner and an overnight stay.
On the final day, the tour follows the famous Road of 1000 Kasbahs, passing old fortresses and traditional villages surrounded by palm groves. The first major stop is Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa” because of its film studios and desert landscapes. Nearby, you visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient ksar that has been featured in many famous films and series.
After exploring its narrow streets and earthen buildings, the journey continues across the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. You will enjoy changing landscapes, from mountain peaks to small Berber villages built on the hillsides. By late afternoon or early evening, you arrive in Marrakech, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, marking the end of your 3-day desert adventure.
The drive from Fes to the Merzouga desert on the first day usually takes between seven and eight hours, including several stops along the way. Although it is a long journey, the scenery changes constantly, and you will have time to rest, take photos, and eat during the trip.
No special clothing is required, but it is recommended to bring comfortable clothes, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for the daytime. Nights in the desert can be colder, especially in winter, so packing a light jacket or warm layer is advisable.
The tour includes either a standard or luxury desert camp, depending on your booking. Luxury tents come with private bathrooms, comfortable beds, and electricity, while standard tents typically offer shared facilities. Both camps provide dinner, breakfast, and traditional music.
Yes, you can bring your suitcase in the car. For the camel ride, you may only need a small backpack with personal items. Your driver will transport your luggage safely to the camp by vehicle
Arrival in Marrakech is usually between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, depending on traffic, weather, and the duration of stops. Your driver will drop you off directly at your hotel or riad.
The tour is available year-round, but the most comfortable months are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Summer can be very hot in the desert, while winter nights can be cold, but both seasons are still manageable with proper clothing
